Are you new to Canada?

If Canada is your new home, we want to hear from you!

In addition to your Canadian home, you may have another home in a different part of the world. The Meaning of Home writing contest is the perfect opportunity to tell other Canadians about what you "love" most about your home and why "home" can be in more than one place.

The contest is also a way for you to improve your English or French writing skills. Here are some helpful writing tips:

  1. Read, Read, Read
The more you read the better you'll write.

  2. Brainstorm
Before you write your first draft, put all of your ideas on paper. There are no bad ideas when you're brainstorming.

  3. Write about what you know
Look around you for ideas and inspiration. Last year's Meaning of Home winner wrote about a habitat home that was being built in his neighborhood.

  4. Edit Your Work
Once your story is complete, it's time to edit your work! Try these helpful tips:
    • Read your story out loud to help catch errors, such as missing words.
    • Ask a friend, family member or teacher to read your work.
